The Kershaw Barricade isn’t just another knife; it’s a well-crafted tool that combines functionality with ease of use. With a 3.5-inch drop point blade made from durable 8Cr13MoV steel, this knife is built to last. The black-oxide coating not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also works to reduce glare and protect against corrosion.

Big Orange Wookie –
I’ve been a fan of Kershaw’s “SpeedSafe” flippers ever since I got my hands on a limited edition OsoSweet with orange scales and a black blade a few years back. Recently, I decided to buy the RJ Tactical (black scales, black blade) and the Barricade (orange scales, black blade) to see which one would make a great gift, and I figured it would be fun to compare all three. (See attached pictures.)
Note: The orange and black OsoSweet is no longer available, but you can still buy the black and silver version, which is the same size and has the same deployment speed as my orange one.
Barricade: This knife is larger than I anticipated. It’s quite hefty and requires a bit more effort to deploy. However, it snaps open quickly and locks securely. With features like a seatbelt cutter and glass breaker, it packs some extra functionality. Still, it’s too bulky for everyday carry, even for someone like me. I didn’t expect that the extra half-inch would significantly affect the ergonomics, but it does, so I’ll keep it in my vehicle’s center console. It could serve as a decent survival knife in a pinch. I did remove the thumb studs, though— they were actually hazardous and caused me to cut my finger when the blade opened. Using Vice grips, I twisted them off with ease.
OsoSweet: This knife opens incredibly fast, is lightweight, and user-friendly. It strikes a perfect balance. Currently, it’s available in black/silver, grey/silver, and green/silver, all with a silver clip, which look pretty plain. For an everyday carry knife, that’s acceptable. It performs well—opens quickly, cuts efficiently, and carries easily. I just wish the color options were more impressive.
RJ Tactical: This knife is just slightly smaller (by 1/10 inch) and lighter than the OsoSweet. It deploys a bit slower, but is quieter. Don’t misunderstand; it still opens quickly, just not as fast as the others. Over time, it has slowed down significantly, requiring some oiling to maintain its flipping ability. I really love the all-black design; it looks sleek and tactical, which can make some people uneasy. I received a few sideways glances with this one, while the much larger Barricade went unnoticed. The RJ is only tactical in appearance.
All three knives feature decent steel (8Cr), can take a hair-popping edge, have assisted opening, and offer tip-up carry. They all come in around the $30 mark, so they’re budget-friendly.
Barricade: A solidly sized knife that’s great for your car or bug-out bag. I haven’t tested the seatbelt cutter or window breaker yet, but they appear functional. It’s too large for daily carry unless you’re a giant like me.
OsoSweet: My absolute favorite (though I’m not thrilled with the new color options). If they offered it in black on black, or better yet, the original orange on black, it would be the top choice. Still, if you have to pick just one, the OsoSweet really is O-so-sweet.
RJ Tactical: I’m not a fan of the slower deployment, but it’s ideal for those new to assisted flippers or who prefer a gentler opening without the “thwack” of an aggressive flipper. The all-black (tactical) look is a bonus. It needed some maintenance for effective flipping after about a year.
If you want something large, go for the Barricade…
If you want a medium size that’s really fast (but plain), pick the Oso…
If you prefer a gentler opening with a tactical flair, choose the RJ…
Or get all three for under $100!
Honest Person –
I recently bought a new car and wanted to organize the tools I usually keep in it when I discovered this Kershaw knife. Having had good experiences with their budget-friendly knives before, I decided to grab it at what seemed like a great price.
I was genuinely impressed as soon as I unboxed it. The spring assist for opening the blade is incredibly strong, and the blade itself was sharper than I anticipated when I used it to break down the shipping box.
The glass breaker tip at the end of the handle looks like it would work effectively if needed, yet it doesn’t stick out too much, so it won’t interfere when using it as a regular knife. I appreciate that the belt cutter is a separate blade, which ensures it stays sharp for emergencies.
Overall, this knife is slightly larger than most I carry, but it’s likely the perfect size for a car multi-tool, allowing for a solid grip when you need to access the additional tools quickly.
Big Orange Wookie –
This knife is a straightforward, well-constructed tool with impressive features. The seat belt cutter has a dual blade design that forms a V in the cutting notch, and both blades are incredibly sharp. The glass breaker looks effective as well. The knife strikes a nice balance in weight—not too light, not too heavy. I’m curious about the force needed to break a car window with it, but I think if you ever have to use it in an emergency, adrenaline will compensate for any extra force required. As a 6’6″ tall, 43-year-old man, you can adjust my definition of “light” accordingly.
The handle texture is excellent, and the molded orange plastic grip is comfortable. My fingertips and the edge of my thumb fit perfectly into the subtle contours when opening it one-handed and while holding it with the blade deployed. The handle is very comfortable, with great proportions—slim but not too slim. It fits nicely in my pocket with the sturdy belt clip facing out. The clip is robust and about a third of the handle’s length, so I have no worries about it coming loose.
Now, about the action. I have large hands, similar to a basketball player’s, and the speed-safe spring is powerful, keeping the blade tight. The spring’s strength means that it pushes against you when closing, so be cautious. Safely closing this blade requires two hands; attempting to do it one-handed may result in a finger getting caught in the snapping blade. The spring resists for the first two-thirds of the closing motion, but then it snaps shut quickly. Be mindful of your fingers—it’s SHARP.
Opening the blade using the “flipper” on the back is a bit challenging. It takes me over a second and quite a bit of pressure to release it, and it snaps into place slowly since it’s so tight and stiff. It might loosen over time, but I’ll wait a few months before considering adjusting the pivot screw (if that’s the right term). My strong hands find it a workout to open one-handed. I really like bright orange-handled knives, and this shade is a great, slightly burnt orange—not overly neon. Overall, I love this knife. I’m sure I’ll misplace it long before it wears out. The blade is sharp—really sharp. For $25, this Kershaw knife is a solid performer, comparable to the quality of their USA or Japan-made products, even though it’s manufactured in China, which can be hit or miss. I’d consider this one a hit, but don’t expect a silky smooth action right out of the box. It’s a great knife for the price!
